The Storz & Bickel Volcano Classic reviewed - analog, robust, proven

Why the analog Volcano still convinces today - our Volcano Classic experience
In practice: The Volcano Classic is a device with a ritual. You switch it on, set the dial to the desired level, and wait a few minutes until it is ready. Then the balloon is filled, removed, and enjoyed at your leisure - with virtually no draw resistance. There is no display, no menu, and no app. That is precisely what makes it so enjoyable for many people: you don't think about the technology, you simply enjoy.
In short: how the Volcano Classic performs
- +Purely electromechanical - extremely robust and durable
- +Convection heating system with high-performance heating cartridge and diaphragm pump
- +Easy Valve balloon: virtually no draw resistance, inhale away from the device
- +Large filling chamber with 6.5 cm³ (approx. 600 mg)
- +Extremely simple operation: dial plus two buttons
- +Independent temperature safety system, air filter, and silencer
- –Around 5 minutes of heating time
- –Temperature in 9 settings, accuracy ± 5 °C - not accurate to the degree
- –Balloon operation, no hose included as standard unlike the Hybrid
- –Stationary only, around 1.6 kg
Volcano Classic in practice: operation, balloon, routine
With the Classic, it is less about features than about routine. Here we show how it works best in everyday use.
Step by step to a filled balloon
When the Volcano Classic comes into play
- Fill the balloons and pass them around
- One balloon per person
- Large chamber for several balloons
- Switch it on, let it heat up, and relax
- One balloon per session
- Inhaling away from the device
- Not really its strong suit
- Around 5 minutes of warm-up
- Anyone who wants to vaporize spontaneously should choose the Hybrid
Everyday impressions
- The controls are so simple that even guests understand them without explanation.
- The temperature fluctuates by ± 5 °C due to the design - this is barely significant when using balloons.
- Maintenance is limited to the screens, chamber, and regularly replacing the balloons.
- It is simply built, but not spartan: an air filter, silencer, and temperature safety cutout are included.
Common mistakes beginners make
- Filling the first balloon too early, before the heating block is evenly warm.
- Continue using balloons for weeks.
- Buy the Classic for quick individual draws.
- Do not brush off the screens after the session.
Technology: proven rather than gimmicky
The Volcano Classic uses a convection heating system: the herbs are vaporized with hot air, without combustion. Inside are a high-performance heating cartridge and a powerful diaphragm pump, both designed for continuous operation. A specially designed aluminum heating block brings the air up to temperature.

Safety is ensured by an air filter, a silencer, and an independent temperature safety cutoff that activates if the control system should ever fail. The filling chamber holds 6.5 cm³ - approximately 600 mg, enough for extended sessions. Its optimized cross-section ensures that the hot air flows evenly through the material. - Heating system: convection with high-performance heating cartridge, aluminum heating block, diaphragm pump · Heating time: approx. 5 min to 180 °C
- Temperature: 130–230 °C via dial in 9 levels, accuracy ± 5 °C
- Filling chamber: 6.5 cm³ (approx. 600 mg)
- Inhalation: Easy Valve balloon with automatic valve
- Safety: air filter, silencer, independent temperature safety cutoff
- Design: purely electromechanical, handcrafted in Tuttlingen
- Dimensions & weight: approx. 20 × 18 × 20 cm, approx. 1,600 g
Operation: dial and two buttons
Use the legendary analog temperature dial to set the heating temperature between 130 and 230 °C, divided into nine levels. There are exactly two buttons: one for the heater and one for the pump. Nothing more is needed.

The temperature accuracy is ± 5 °C because the heating block heats up and cools down again during operation. At level 6, you are therefore operating at approximately 185 to 195 °C. This is normal and well below the autoignition temperature of plant material.
The Easy Valve balloon system
The vapor is collected in the familiar Easy Valve balloons. Here's how it works:

Because the filled balloon can be detached, you are not tied to the device while inhaling - and there is practically no draw resistance. The balloon and mouthpiece are maintenance-free, but should be replaced for hygiene reasons about every two weeks - and each balloon should be used by only one person. Since 2017, a balloon with an adapter ring has been included, allowing you to replace only the balloon itself.
What the Volcano Classic stands for today
The Volcano Classic is the brand's purely electromechanical desktop device: an analog dial, two buttons, and an Easy Valve balloon. It is aimed at anyone who values durability and operation without a learning curve more than a display, app, or hose.
Cleaning: chamber, screens, balloons
A short routine after every session keeps the vapor clean over time - much more pleasant than removing dried-on residue later.

Volcano Classic: the most important questions
How does the Volcano Classic work?
A heating cartridge heats the air through an aluminum heating block, and a diaphragm pump pushes it through the filling chamber into the balloon. You remove the filled balloon and inhale at your leisure.
How long does the Volcano Classic take to heat up?
About five minutes to reach 180 °C. Let it heat up for the full time before filling the first balloon.
Why does the temperature fluctuate by ± 5 °C?
The heating block heats up and then cools down again, causing the temperature to move within this range. This is normal and well below the autoignition temperature of plant material.
How often should I replace the balloon?
About every two weeks, and use each balloon only by one person. With the adapter ring, you only need to replace the balloon itself.
Can I use the Solid Valve System?
Yes. Since 2017, the Classic has been supplied with the Easy Valve System; the Solid Valve System is available separately.
I want to compare the Volcano Classic with other models - where can I do that?
We’ve summarized how the Classic compares with the Hybrid and the other models in the Storz & Bickel Guide.
